Our experience has shown that patients complain of lipedema symptoms in a wide variety of areas. Some lipedema patients also have painful fat deposits on their back, for example, on the shoulder blades, the bra line or in the area of the neck (‘buffalo hump’). Conservative treatment options can temporarily alleviate the symptoms, but only liposuction can achieve lasting improvements.
Our lipedema specialists know the problems that our patients face every day. Therefore, it is a matter close to our hearts to ensure that they can feel at home in their bodies again through holistic treatments. Do you have any questions about liposuction in general or about liposuction on the back? We will gladly inform you in detail about liposuction on the back in a personal consultation.
How can we help you?

Although it is generally believed that lipedema only affects the arms and legs, many patients suffer from the same symptoms on their backs. Since the symptoms of the disease include pain, sensitivity to pressure and rapid formation of bruises, lying in the supine position is particularly unpleasant.
At LIPOCURA® we use the PAL method (power assisted liposuction) for extremely gentle removal of the diseased fat cells using the tumescent technique. First, we inject the special tumescent solution to loosen the fat cells from the surrounding tissue. That way they can be removed more thoroughly with the help of the finest vibrating cannulas, which are equipped with a rapidly oscillating tip. We perform the surgery under general anaesthesia. This allows us to remove significantly more fat in just one procedure. This in turn means fewer surgeries for you. Consequently, there is also no further healing time and no additional costs.
We always see our lipedema treatments from a holistic point of view. We are there for you before and after the surgery – from consultation, planning and preparation to implementation and aftercare. We are also available for any questions or further skin tightening treatments.
In an initial personal consultation, we get to know you and your individual situation and can draw up a specific treatment concept based on the available findings, for which we take detailed ultrasound images, among other things. We will inform you in detail about the procedure of the surgery and the subsequent aftercare – you can also read all the relevant information in our Book ‘All about Lipedema’, which we will be happy to give you. We also make a detailed photo documentation for the before and after comparison. If you have any questions later on, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Liposuction on the back is only carried out in a single surgery in the case of very pronounced findings. We can usually combine liposuction of the back, buttocks or legs. We start the treatment by marking the areas on your back that need liposuction. Then you gently fall asleep under general anaesthesia and are monitored throughout the surgery by an experienced anaesthetist. Next, we make minimal incisions in inconspicuous areas and use them to inject the tumescent solution. After a certain reaction time, we can gently remove the now loosened fatty tissue using a delicate vibrating cannula. The procedure takes about 2–3 hours, depending on the amount of work involved.
In order to avoid post-operative dents and the formation of oedema, our patients are given specially fitted compression garments. They should be worn night and day for the next six weeks and then during the day for another six weeks. This is followed by a one-night stay in the clinic. In the first days after the surgery, we recommend that our patients allow their bodies to rest and avoid strenuous activities. Light movements are nevertheless good to help the wound heal. Regular lymphatic drainage is also important: 3 times a week for the first 3 weeks, then 2 times a week for at least another 6 weeks. Rarely occurring risks include wound healing problems, temporary numbness and temporary haematoma. Swelling is quite normal during healing. Our experienced specialists adhere to the highest quality standards and can therefore keep these risks to an absolute minimum.
In some cases, the liposuction of the back may result in excess skin that cannot disappear on its own. In order to prevent resulting symptoms such as inflammation or restricted movement and also to improve the aesthetic appearance, we offer various methods of skin tightening. These tightening methods – for example, laser or cool plasma tightening – can be performed immediately after liposuction or at a later point.
